Size and Appearance
The large superworm (Zophobas morio larva) runs about 1.75 to 2 inches long (4–6 cm) and is noticeably chunkier than a mealworm. The body is firm with a hard-ish exoskeleton, light brown banding between segments, and six small legs near the head.
Life cycle
Like all beetles, they go through complete metamorphosis: egg → larva (the “superworm” stage) → pupa → adult beetle. A key quirk is that superworm larvae won’t pupate while crowded together in a bin with others. To breed them, you have to isolate each larva individually (often in a small container or film canister with no food), which triggers it to curl up and pupate after a week or two. The pupa then becomes a black darkling beetle.
Why people use them as feeders
They’re high in fat and protein and have a softer, thinner exoskeleton than mealworms relative to their size, making them a good occasional feeder. Because they’re fatty, they’re usually fed as a treat rather than a staple. They also stay active and wriggle, which triggers feeding responses in many reptiles.

Care and storage
Unlike mealworms, superworms should not be refrigerated cold temperatures kill them. They’re kept at room temperature in a ventilated container with a bedding/food substrate like wheat bran or oats, plus a moisture source such as carrot, potato, or leafy greens. Gut-loading them (feeding them nutritious food before offering them to your pet) improves their nutritional value.

⚠️ Caution: Superworms have stronger mandibles than mealworms and can bite, so some keepers crush the head before feeding them to small reptiles to prevent the worm from biting the animal internally.
