Slow-moving, highly nutritious live treats—the perfect easily digestible meal for picky reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
Mealworm Pupae are the transitional life stage between a mealworm and a beetle. Completely soft-bodied and highly digestible, pupae offer an excellent meat-to-shell ratio with a much lower chitin content than adult beetles or large mealworms. Because they are slow-moving and cannot run or jump, they make a stress-free target for timid pets or animals recovering from illness.
- Soft & Easily Digestible: Lower chitin content means maximum nutrient absorption and zero risk of impaction.
- Docile Prey: Cannot run, climb, bite, or jump—ideal for slow or clumsy hunters.
- Nutritious Variety: Packed with the vital proteins and healthy fats needed for growth and recovery.
- Perfect For: Bearded dragons, leopard geckos, crested geckos, tarantulas, frogs, and hedgehogs.
Description
Expand your pet’s dietary variety with our premium Mealworm Pupae. While many keepers are used to feeding out regular mealworms, the pupal stage is a hidden gem in reptile nutrition, offering a completely unique texture and an incredibly high concentration of easily accessible nutrients.
The Ultimate Low-Stress Feeder
Mealworm pupae are completely passive. They do not possess mouthparts to bite, and they lack legs to run away or crawl out of feeding dishes. Instead, they gently twitch when touched or noticed by a predator. This minimal, non-aggressive movement is highly effective at catching your pet’s eye without causing the stress or anxiety that fast-moving crickets or roaches can bring to younger, older, or sick animals.
Why Choose Mealworm Pupae?
-
- Soft Exoskeleton: As a mealworm transitions into a pupa, its tough outer shell breaks down into a soft, creamy skin. This makes pupae exceptionally easy to chew and digest, making them perfect for sensitive stomachs or juvenile reptiles.
- High Nutritional Value: During the pupal stage, the insect is at a metabolic peak, packing concentrated proteins and healthy fats that are excellent for weight gain, breeding females, or growing juveniles.
- No Messy Upkeep: Pupae do not eat or drink. They require absolutely no food, water, or bedding maintenance while in storage, making them incredibly low-maintenance for keepers.
💡 Storage & Care Instructions
Because pupae are a live, changing organism, you can easily control their life cycle using basic temperature adjustments:
-
- To Slow Down Development: Store the pupae in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer or door shelves at a steady temperature between 7°C and 10°C. This slows their metabolism and keeps them in the soft pupal stage for up to a few weeks.
- To Hatch Into Beetles: If you want them to transform into adult mealworm beetles (which make great crunchy treats for larger monitors or geckos), simply leave them at a warm room temperature (22°C to 26°C). They will naturally darken and emerge as beetles within 1 to 2 weeks.
- Keep Dry: Moisture and condensation are fatal to pupae. Ensure their storage container remains completely dry to prevent premature spoilage.
