My gecko loves these however they don’t live very long. I keep them in the container they come in and they just seem to die and/or turn black and hard which I don’t feel comfortable feeding them when they are in the state of decomposition.

The black worms are not dead, they are actually in the process of turning into their adult stage as a fly. They are completely safe to feed if they are black. That being said you can extend their shelf life from turning black so quickly by keeping them in a wine chiller at approximately 55 degrees F.
The soldier fly larvae are all healthy and my bearded loves them.
