Description
Small Hornworms are an exceptional, highly nutritious live feeder option designed to bridge the gap between microscopic hatchling foods and heavy, chitinous adult insects. Measuring approximately 1/2″ to 3/4″ (approx. 12 to 19 mm), these vibrant green or turquoise-blue larvae are perfectly scaled for growing juveniles and medium-sized insectivorous pets. Because they are completely soft-bodied, they offer a safe, easily digestible meal that eliminates the risk of impaction from hard exoskeletons while providing an unparalleled combination of moisture and essential minerals. Their eye-catching coloration and active wiggling motion immediately stimulate predatory instincts, making them a highly effective choice for breaking hunger strikes in stubborn or convalescing animals.
Why Choose Small Hornworms?
    • Optimal Hydration Support: Composed of roughly 85% natural moisture, these feeders provide an excellent source of dietary hydration to support healthy kidney function and overall shedding health.
    • 100% Digestible Structure: Lacking any hard chitin or complex joints, small hornworms pass effortlessly through delicate digestive tracts, ensuring maximum nutrient absorption.
    • Incredible Palatability: The bright, natural coloration provides an immediate visual cue that triggers feeding responses in species that ignore duller, darker insects.
    • Rapid Nutrient Delivery: A low-fat, high-calcium protein source that delivers an excellent natural calcium-to-phosphorus ratio ideal for skeletal development.

Target Species
Small hornworms are perfectly sized for juvenile bearded dragons, sub-adult leopard geckos, crested geckos, medium-sized chameleons, monitors, larger dart frogs, tree frogs, skinks, and insectivorous birds or small mammals.
Storage & Growth Rate Customization
Hornworms possess an incredibly efficient metabolism and can double their physical size within days if kept in a warm environment. To manage your bulk inventory effectively, you can control their growth speed through temperature regulation:
    • To Promote Growth: Keep your rearing containers at a stable room temperature between 24°C and 27°C (75°F to 82°F) and ensure continuous access to high-quality hornworm diet.
    • To Steady Growth: To maintain this specific “small” sizing tier for a longer period, transfer the habitat to a cool room or a specialized wine cooler set strictly between 13°C and 15°C (55°F to 60°F).
    • Critical Temperature Warning: Never store hornworms inside a conventional household refrigerator. Exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) is fatal to these tropical insects.

Handling & Habitat Sanitation
To maintain maximum cleanliness and prevent high-density mortality, always position your rearing habitats upside down (resting safely on the lid rim). This layout encourages the worms to climb upwards to feed naturally on their nutrient-rich media, allowing their frass (droppings) to drop cleanly onto the lid for quick, stress-free daily disposal. Ensure the setup is kept in a well-ventilated space to protect the colony from stagnant humidity and mold.
