Description
Medium Hornworms are a highly nutritious, premium live feeder option engineered specifically for sub-adult and medium-to-large insectivorous pets. Measuring approximately 1″ to 1.5″ (approx. 25 to 38 mm), these plump, vibrant green or turquoise-blue larvae provide a substantial, meaty meal that easily satisfies the appetite of active reptiles. Because they are completely soft-bodied, they offer a dense, high-yield source of protein and calcium that is completely digestible from head to tail. This eliminates the risk of gut impaction associated with hard, chitinous crickets or superworms, making them an exceptionally safe choice for animals requiring a high-calorie or high-calcium diet to support rapid growth and recovery.
Why Choose Medium Hornworms?
-
- Substantial Hydration Source: Composed of roughly 85% natural moisture, these juicy feeders act as an excellent dietary hydration supplement, supporting vital organ function and clean shedding cycles.
- Chitin-Free & Highly Digestible: Lacking a hard exoskeleton, medium hornworms break down smoothly and effortlessly in your pet’s digestive tract, allowing for maximum nutrient absorption.
- Visual Strike Stimulant: Their bright neon coloration and heavy, enticing movements provide an immediate visual cue that effortlessly breaks hunger strikes in stubborn, stressed, or sick animals.
- Premium Balanced Nutrition: Low in fat and rich in essential minerals, these feeders offer a highly palatable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio perfect for steady skeletal development.
Target Species
Medium hornworms are an ideal size tier for sub-adult and adult bearded dragons, adult leopard geckos, pre-adult chameleons, monitors, blue-tongued skinks, larger tegus, large tree frogs, and diverse insectivorous birds or small exotic mammals.
Storage & Growth Rate Customization
Hornworms have an incredibly fast metabolism and will grow rapidly if exposed to warmth. When managing your live inventory, you can easily control their growth trajectory to fit your exact feeding schedules:
-
- To Accelerate Growth: Keep your rearing containers at warm room temperatures between 24°C and 27°C (75°F to 82°F) and ensure continuous access to high-quality hornworm diet.
- To Maintain Medium Sizing: To stall their growth and keep them at this specific mid-tier sizing for longer, store the habitat in a cool room or a dedicated wine cooler regulated between 13°C and 15°C (55°F to 60°F).
- Crucial Temperature Warning: Never store hornworms in a standard household refrigerator. Any prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) will prove fatal to the entire colony.
Handling & Habitat Sanitation
To ensure optimal health and longevity of your bulk colony, always store your rearing habitats upside down with the lid facing downward. Hornworms naturally climb upward to feed on the nutrient-rich media hanging above, which allows their frass (droppings) to cleanly fall away onto the lid for quick, stress-free daily disposal. Always place your setups in a well-ventilated area to prevent stagnant humidity and dangerous mold growth.
